What API 6A Certification Means for You
API 6A is the American Petroleum Institute’s specification for wellhead and tree equipment, covering flanges, connectors, and fittings used in high-pressure oil and gas applications. When a manufacturer holds API 6A certification, it means their products, processes, and quality management systems have been independently audited and meet the demanding requirements the standard sets.
For engineers and procurement teams, working with an API 6A certified manufacturer provides confidence that flanges rated from 2,000 to 20,000 PSI are produced under controlled conditions with full material traceability. Every flange we manufacture can be traced back to the raw material heat, through each machining and inspection step, to final testing and shipment. That level of traceability is not optional in critical service applications. It is essential.
The Advantage of In-House Testing
Many manufacturers outsource their non-destructive testing, heat treatment, or hydrostatic testing to third-party facilities. While third-party testing is perfectly valid, it introduces lead time, logistical complexity, and potential scheduling delays that can push back delivery on time-sensitive projects.
MSM maintains comprehensive in-house testing and treatment capabilities across our 350,000-square-foot facility, including:
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Our certified NDT technicians perform ultrasonic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, and visual inspections on-site. Catching a defect early in the process, rather than after a component ships to a third-party lab, saves time and ensures problems are resolved before they compound.
Hydrostatic Testing: We test components at pressures up to 30,000 PSI in our facility. Every flange and fitting that requires pressure testing is verified here before it leaves our shop. There is no waiting for an outside lab to schedule your job.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) and Stress Relieving: Our in-house furnaces allow us to perform stress relief and post-weld heat treatment on our own schedule. This is particularly important for large weldments and custom fabrications where thermal treatment is critical to achieving the required mechanical properties and relieving residual stresses from welding.
Having these capabilities under one roof means faster turnaround, tighter process control, and fewer opportunities for miscommunication between separate facilities.
ASME B16.9 Compliance for Weld Fittings
Beyond API 6A flanges, our heavy wall weld fittings are manufactured to ASME B16.9 standards. This specification covers factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings, including tees, crosses, reducers, and cushion tees. Compliance with ASME B16.9 ensures dimensional accuracy, material integrity, and pressure ratings that engineers can rely on when designing piping systems.
Quality as a Competitive Advantage
Certifications are not just certificates hanging on a wall. They represent a manufacturer’s ongoing investment in process control, personnel training, equipment calibration, and continuous improvement. When you request a quote from MSM, you are not just getting a price on a flange. You are getting the assurance that comes from a facility purpose-built for high-pressure manufacturing, staffed by experienced machinists and welders, and equipped to test and verify every component before it ships.
If you are evaluating flange manufacturers for your next project, we encourage you to ask about certifications, testing capabilities, and traceability documentation. The answers will tell you a great deal about the quality you can expect.
